Cuba Gulch - 3; Me - 0

2020.09.19 09:06 BeccainDenver Cuba Gulch - 3; Me - 0

Where: Cataract Gulch to CDT to Cuba Gulch Loop, Lake City, CO
When: 2020/09/11 - 20200/09/13
Distance: 31.43 km/19.53 mi, 9607' to 12811',
Conditions: 25-45F, sunny Fri & Sat & partly cloudy on Sunday but was forecast partially cloudy Fri-Sat & sunny on Sunday. 12 inches of snow the Tues that week with snowstorms on Wed & Thurs.
Pre-Trip info:
Park at Cataract Gulch. There is bear activity so you'll need to store any potential problems in the communal bear boxes at the parking area.
Also, Mill Creek CG is the last place you have to throw out any trash. It's much easier to stop by and do that on your way in than driving back and forth from the Cataract Gulch TH.
Trip Goals:
  1. I found the Cuba Gulch TH years ago when I made a wrong turn on the way to American Basin. I was going to hike it then but realized no one knew where I was, I had no service & I had no map. It made my "list".
  2. Work on my winter camping/shoulder season game. I've been coaching a winter sport the last four years = aka no free time so I was itching to play in the snow.
  3. Fitness check. I hiked 6 miles a day pretty well in March on my Arkansas trip. I have since drastically upped my base mileage so I wanted to see how that translated to this trip. I had surgery in October & again in March for a breathing issue (scarred airway) but also have a rare chronic nose muscle injury + vocal chord dysfunction = vcd. Here on out pretty much called my nose injury because my vcd is pretty under control. So, starting from ground zero in some ways, fitness-since March.
  4. Long-term, post COVID, my next international trip goal is either Peru or northern Pakistan. I want to have my health issue dialed in so I can have the best trip possible. In Kyrgyzstan, I did my best to prep pre-trip but a lot of the elevation was beyond my nose capacity. Is elevation a trigger for the nose injury so I need a pretty sedentary trip at high altitude, or can I train for it and manage it and have a more adventurous trek? In other news, if you are putting off that big trip, obviously wait until after COVID but don't wait too long. The unexpected can happen.
Lighter Pack: 20 Degree Nights; Discussion here including u/gojiraneko telling me to ditch the JetBoil, which came true, kind of.
Photo Album: See Maggie Cuba’s Cataract
Map: of the out & back
Trip Report:
Tl;dr: Cataract Gulch (outside of Lake City) is pretty. Cuba Gulch is full of animals. While preparing for the lows, I forgot I'd be hiking in the highs. Sunburn + nose injury return (bpw probably didn’t help) + drop-dead time + trail issues led to me abandoning my pack in Cuba Gulch.
Day 1 (5.13 km, 3.19 mi, 9619' to 11963', 55F/36F in Lake City so 55F to 20 F at night?. Probably a bit warmer than that due to microclimate)
Drove 5.5 hours from Denver to Lake City. Slept 4 hours for an alpine start.
After getting started, realized I had never called my mom with final trip details. 100 mile RT detour to Creede as I have never gotten cell reception within 50 miles of Lake City. Bonus: Gas station egg & sausage muffin for breakfast.
Got to Cataract Gulch. De-beared my car based on info at the TH (was news to me despite researching this trip fairly well). Finalized my pack. Realized after our last group camping trip my lighter was no longer in my Jetboil and my poles were no longer in the car. Ditched all parts of the Jetboil except the top cup. Unintentionally cold soaking. ✅ Based on my meals (see LP), I wasn't too worried.
10:30 am hit the trail. Just a stunning trail and I stopped at so many "waterfalls" to get pictures before I got to the actual falls.
I don't know why Lake City doesn't have more climbing. I saw a rad roof and just so many interesting pitches. It's volcanic which I generally think of as being good climbing. 🤷‍♀️
Popped out of the wooded part to some rock fields and heard elk bugle. Broke through ankle-deep, virgin snow in some spots.
Realized I was already low on sunscreen. This "partially cloudy" day was full sun. Packing, I had been worried about the cold. Researched where it might be warmer to sleep from Cal Topo. Got feedback on my LP for my layering system. Bought UA Cold Gear after agonizing over pants.
I forgot all about sunshine at altitude. I have lived in my Black Dots hat all summer and I never even thought of packing it for partially sunny days.
Hiked up through the valley, really digging how the recent snow set off the views. Set up camp among the bristlecones on a rocky outcrop.
Realized my face was hot so I crawled in my tent for shade at 4. Decided I would try to cold soak my quinoa; let it soak & took a nap.
Couple hours later sunset and 360 degree views made for fun dinner prep. Crunchy quinoa wasn't as bad as I thought but not hungry.
Got ready for bed including rinsing my nose with water filtered from the creek that had been in my insulated hydration flask during my nap. My nose was not happy.
👃 status: the beginning of bad-kind-of-tight
Day 2: 11.6 km, 7.21 mi, 11903' to 12840', 64F/36F in Lake City so 40s F to 20 F again?
Woke up early to catch the alpenglow on Half Peak; my tent looked like it belonged in Britney Spears’ Toxic video. Tried to find the route up I had mapped on the peak. Nope. No thanks. Definitely sketchy. My boots weren't frozen (thanks for the advice to bring them in the tent). Packed up slowly, missing my coffee. Ice cold bidet was not a problem.
Hiked up to Cataract Lake and stopped for a snack break.
👃 status: heavy darth vader on the flats and light asthma attack on the inclines. I do my PT for my VCD and it helps. For my nose, the good side is bad and the bad side is ???. I can't even tell.
Based on my nose, I decide to take the shortest path, so I'll take the old CDT trail. I know the worse it gets, the harder it is to breathe and the more I slow down.
The connection between Cataract Gulch and the CDT is just really good trailbuilding. Just enough markers and very efficient. Still hiking through lots of ankle-deep snow.
Hit the CDT and I'm hiking up lots of slow inclines. All the snow-covered peaks really add to this section. My face is more and more on fire and above treeline, this partially cloudy forecast is just one giant mountain sun. I have hiking clothes for cold weather and with the sun it feels 60+. My face is now fully on fire. My base layer top = head covering, using the sides to shade my face. My fat ass is backpacking in a sports bra and I really don't care.
See 2 CDT thru hikers. Hike up and up but my boots aren't the first in the snow anymore. Nice sketchy snow crossing, post-holing up to my knees with no poles. Whoever broke that trail did it perfectly. Usually it's some 6'4" human where I struggle to get from step to step. The slope is steep and completely covered in snow so I am super grateful to take such balanced steps. Please sign my petition to only let people 5'6" or shorter make initial postholes.
Slip on a particularly steep downhill and landed hard on my pack. Still taking falls like Cristiano.
Near dusk I hit Cuba Gulch and the first thing I see is a stomping moose.
Circle around on the CDT to the Cuba Gulch trail sign. There's a sign. There is no trail. I hike what looks to be the trail and it just….doesn't exist.
I spend some time looking into the basin trying to find the trail. I see elk. I see elk trails.
Look up and there are 4 hikers coming. Young kids with huge packs and mighty sunburns, turns out they are self-described "foolish thru hikers". One of them has guthook. The trail isn't on his guthook. His advice is to stick to the flatter looking right side but I know the trail goes down the left side of the creek to start. And I know from the beta, that when it gets steep in the canyon, I have to be on the correct side.
Hike down into the basin to where I think I see the trail? I get on the trail. I am on the trail. It is not a trail.
Earlier this year, I was in this exact situation in Arkansas and I decided to push forward. It ended up being very sketchy and I knew that Cuba Gulch was much, much steeper, with little room for error. I promised myself last time that if I was on a trail and I could tell it wasn't a trail, I would do the safe thing and just hike out the established trail I had come in on.
Probably an hour of hiking back up, looking for the route, trying a different branch. Is it an animal trail or is it a trail? So frustrating. I wander around the basin a bit more, trying to find the trail. Finally, it's dark & I gotta set camp. I decide to try & look for the trail one more time in the morning light.
It's about 4 miles, all downhill and then a quick road hike out Cuba Gulch. It's about 10 miles to hike back out and it took me 2 full days to get in. Plus, I have to figure out how to get out of the Cuba Gulch basin.
I have to be out by 7pm the next day in order to drive out and get to Creede to call my mom by 9 pm. She was already clear that she was worried about me camping out in such cold weather with snow still an issue on a solo trip.
👃 status: light asthma attack all the time. My bad side hasn't failed but it is very, very close. Pretty minimal flow. If I take 3 days off now, I'll be ok. If I push it much more, I'm going to be out for 2-3 weeks.
I decide if I go out, I can't make it in time with my pack. I'll take out only my food/possible bear attractants. Hopefully, I can pay a guide in Lake City to hike in and get my pack and the rest of my gear. My nose legitimately can't take it right now. It's so mad I skip rinsing it.
Was going to make cherry chia coconut pudding but I want to sleep, not eat. I mix it up and seal it in a bag to cold soak until morning. Dinner in my sleeping bag (because it's much snowier and colder in Cuba Gulch) is an Epic bar and a Cotsco trail mix pack.
Go to bed and my mind is racing all night. I can't stop calculating all the pieces, parts, risks, outcomes.
When I do fall asleep, my nose is so bad that I keep waking myself up with the choking noises.
At some point, Mr. Snuffleupagus starts snuffling around outside my tent. I don't know if it is a moose or a bear and I don't give a fuck. I get it Snuffy, you and I sound the exact same. But I am not fucking playing. Let me sleep.
After a few minutes, Snuffy leaves. I still sleep like shit - trying to stop my brain from trying to figure out how tomorrow will work. But I was definitely cozy and warm while in full anxiety mode.
Day 3: 14.7 km, 9.14 mi, 9607' to 12811', +1711' -3969', 70F in Lake City so 50s F, 20F overnight, probably)
Wake up to everything frozen. The boots in my tent. My insulated water bladder. Everything. I knew I didn’t want to camp in the gulch itself or in the willows but it is what it is.
Look in the morning sun for a trail. Nope. Actually, there's like 80 well-established animal trails. They all look equally like trails but none of them look like "the trail". See more elk including a harem with their young.
Start figuring out the logistics of where I am going to leave my pack and what needs to come out with me. Sloppy break down of camp and packing up a bailout bag so as not to attract Mr. Snuffleupagus and I'm out.
Drop my pack and cover it with my rain poncho so whoever hikes in to get it can find it. Take pictures of the spot for reference and screenshot the GPS.
I can either hike back up to where the Cuba Gulch trail meets the CDT or I can hike up to the CDT directly. Going directly will save me some back trekking. I have already seen 3 or 4 thru hikers on the trail and the nice big cairns are visible from the valley. I pick my line and end up going more or less straight up a frozen seep.
Pop out on the CDT; triumphant trail mix bag for breakfast.
👃 status: Same as yesterday. At least it isn't worsening.
I am still crazy bad sunburned so I'm balancing wearing my shirt for warmth and using it to cover my head & face from the Sun.
Day is pretty uneventful. Just grinding out the miles and seeing a crazy amount of thru hikers and section hikers (6 or 8 maybe). One thru hiker mentions enjoy your nice 4.5 miles of downhill and he’s not wrong. See a gentleman doing the trail in Vans high tops and start to contemplate my boots.
Really appreciate the downhill and views going northbound. The beauty just flows effortlessly. Crazy how much snow has melted; the trail is frequently bone dry.
👃 status: Asthma attack range even with easy hiking. Nose PT isn't working for either side.
Four miles from home, I now understand what "feeling boots on your feet" means. Dreaming of Chacos but know I only have my trainers in the car.
The waterfalls in Cataract Gulch are even better now that the recent snow is melting.
Get down around 6 pm.
In the front seat are my Chacos and I get a little misty-eyed.
Drive down to an ATV rental/general store/phones/shower spot and ask to borrow their phone. I thought I was asking the owner. It was just some really sweet dude? Call my mom and leave a message about being out and needing to stay an extra day to get my pack.
Figure I'll stay in Creede so I can have cell service and research solutions. Driving out to the main road, pick up a hitcher because small towns. Turns out he's a local HS kid who is bailing on a camping trip due to the weather. He'd love to get paid to hike in Cuba Gulch and get my pack for me. It's mtn school so he has Mon off (class Tues-Fri). Drop him off in town and my phone starts blowing up. I apparently have service in Lake City now? Try to find lodging but everything is closed/booked up. Drive to Creede anyways.
A+ stay at Creede Snowshoe Resort. They happen to have some aloe around which is the best news at 10 pm in the middle of nowhere. See my face for the first time and realize I have skier burn. It's that strange overly even burn that comes from light also being reflected up at you = iconic jawline burn.
Get up and eat bomb ass homemade cinnamon rolls & monkey bread.
👃 status: Got a full, correct flush which helped. I sure as hell packed out my squish bottle & saline in my tiny bail out bag. Gone back to heavy Darth Vader.
Call the high schooler to ask him to send me his address so I can map it. No reply. Get to his house. Another kid is coming out. I aks him if he knows about the high schooler or the plans we made. Kid has no idea and no idea where the high schooler is. I call the high schooler and tell him I am sorry I missed him and will work on finding a guide to go get my pack.
Stop by the information center in Lake City. A+ dude there is super helpful. Turns out Cuba Gulch is completely wiped out, hit by an avalanche this last winter.
While my nose is slightly better, I cannot do the 11 miles in + all the elevation in one day. My pack is still there.
But I am so glad I didn't try to push down Cuba Gulch. The reason there was no trail was...because there was no trail.
If I had not backtracked I would have been a worthless EMS call. I could hike out so I did.
Gear Notes:
Inreach - Already discussed as a Christmas gift with the fam. There's that.
WM Antelope - Ride or die for this bag as this point. Slept well and when I didn't sleep, I was still so cozy. 10/10 for any cold-sleeping mountain folks.
Agestix down booties - worth the hype. When my socks didn't dry out night 2, I wore them over my socks until the last minute. Really helped.
REI Quarter Dome - didn't really think it was going to be as comfortable as it was. Only issue was sitting up on my air mattress = hitting the roof and ice crystals raining down. That being said, given I want to live with a 2.75 lb bag and a Thermarest, it's probably the next big replacement.
Bic lighter - Now a bic + baby bic girl. At least I know I can ditch the stove and still protect my nose injury.
Cold soaking - instant coconut milk does not rehydrate cold. Honestly, didn't mind it that much other than the nose issues. Made everything faster. There's a separate conversation already out there about how to maybe do this and manage my nose.
Food - Trail snacks were pretty dialed in. I switched Kind bars for Epic bars and will unswitch that for the carb boost.
Dinner - A hot mess. I ate almost nothing because I was not hungry which is a lot of weight to pack back out. In Kyrgyzstan, same no-dinner-hunger issue, I lived on their fatty soups. So maybe that?
Recovery drinks: I was as tired at the end of each day as I would be from 8 hours of playing ultimate at a tournament in my 20s and woke up feeling better on this trip than I did back then. I am 20 years older. I just don't like the Vega apple berry flavor recovery drink. I need my yummy Tailwind recovery drink mix to come in the mail. I missed it. 💔
💩: I don’t usually eat a lot of fat but based my calories on GearSkeptic’s high calorie/oz recommendations which ends up much higher fat than normal. My system ended up being well-greased. This led me on a hunt for extra wag bags. Just a heads up if you are planning alpine trips or counting out wipes.
Because I was in pursuit of wag bags, I dumped my dried mangoes into my Takis. By day 5, the Takis dried out the mangoes and coated them in chili dust, which makes for chewy but really high-quality chili-covered mangoes.
Snow: I missed it and it was fun playing in it again; will do a lot more of that. But if I had waited 2 days and had trail runners, I would have saved a lot of worn weight. Noted.
Fuck my LP. I am carrying in sweat-resistant, 50+ spray-on sunscreen for all snow-ish hangs. It stays forever and fixes the reflection issue.
Clothing: Forgot how high altitude sunshine works. Could have easily hiked in my summer hiking gear despite it being in the 40s.
UA Cold Gear pants - Thanks for the recommendation, UL. Keeping them in rotation, likely as sleep pants.
Definitely too much clothing right now from a bpw end. At the same time, I wore everything but my poncho in the mornings.
Sierra Designs Wind shirt - sure is nice. Can use its hood cinched down instead of packing in a balaclava to protect my nose when it's over 10 at night. Do I get wind pants to replace my rain pants unless I know I will constantly be sitting on snow / be in rain?
Not coaching so I will get more time to play with all these layers on long runs, etc. Gonna be goofy as heck running in my poncho but that's how I figure this shit out. 🤷‍♀️

2020.09.18 14:20 thfc1882 Great Bale perspective from Rory Smith in New York Times

This is from his free weekly soccer e-mail newsletter on, so I hope the mods are okay w/ me posting this. A great read.
Gareth Bale Moves Fast. Soccer Moves Faster.
By Rory Smith
After a while, Gareth Bale almost seemed to relish it: the confrontation, the controversy, the opprobrium. It was as if he had stopped trying to fight it, wasting his energy correcting misunderstandings or railing at willful misinterpretations, and instead invited them to come crashing down on him.
The flag, Bale felt, was just a bit of a joke. He had seen it — the Welsh dragon, festooned with the slogan “Wales, Golf, Madrid, In That Order,” a reference to a chant that had been doing the rounds among the fans of his national team — a few weeks before, and he found it funny enough to demur when his teammates suggested they might like to show it off.
But then came the images of Bale in the games of the socially distanced era, sitting in the stands as he watched Real Madrid play yet another game without his participation, his mind clearly wandering: rolling up a piece of cardboard as a telescope, covering his eyes with his face mask or pretending to drop off to sleep.
It was all a little childish, not especially professional, but essentially harmless: plenty of players joke around during their time on the substitutes’ bench. (There have been rare instances of phones being checked, though to many that is beyond the pale.) But still: those pictures spoke of boredom, of frivolity, of a player who had long since stopped caring.
Bale, deep down, probably had. He knew, by then, that he was not going to play, and that even if he did play, he would not start the next game, or the game after that. Real Madrid’s manager, Zinedine Zidane, had made it abundantly clear he did not have a place in his plans, much less on his team.
Real Madrid’s fans — though absent from the stands — had long since let Bale know that he was no longer welcome. The team’s allies in the Spanish news media had let slip, time and again, that the club’s hierarchy felt the same way. Someone, somewhere had been briefing reporters, over and over, that Bale had long been a distant, detached figure, that he had never bothered learning Spanish, that he preferred to play golf. Bale knew he was not wanted. He was no longer prepared to go along with the charade.
Bale’s war with his employer has been simmering for so long that the strangeness of the situation has been obscured. Until last summer, he was still, after all, Real Madrid’s record signing, by all calculations except the ones they gave to Cristiano Ronaldo. It has hardly been a disastrous investment: in his seven years in Spain, Bale won La Liga twice and the Champions League four times.
He has actively won those trophies, too: he has not just been along for the ride. He scored in the final in 2014 — the goal that put Real Madrid ahead in extra time and finally broke Atlético Madrid’s resolve and, as a substitute, two more in the victory over Liverpool in 2018. The first was, perhaps, the finest goal ever scored in a European Cup final.
And yet, now, there is little to no querying of why, exactly, Zidane has no time for a player who has enjoyed such success, and who has, at times, delivered for him. Blame is apportioned not to the coach who has ostracized him, but to the player, for either not justifying his vast salary or foregoing it entirely simply to escape.
The idea that Real Madrid might be so desperate to shed him from its books, meanwhile, that it is willing to allow him to return to his former club, Tottenham Hotspur, on loan — for no fee, and with Spurs covering only half his wages — is seen, if anything, not as madness on the part of Real Madrid but as a risk for Tottenham.
Zidane’s record, of course, helps with all of that, as it is difficult to question too intensely the judgment of a coach who has won three Champions League titles in five attempts. So, too, do those images, the ones that make Bale look reckless and feckless in equal measure, the ones that lend credence to the accusations that he does not mind not playing, as long as he is getting paid, the ones that suggest he is either playing to the gallery or trolling his critics.
And so, without question, does the propaganda campaign that seems to have been waged against Bale — again, so as not to lose sight of how odd this is, a Real Madrid employee — by the club itself. Bale is, by almost any measure, the most successful player Britain has ever exported: only another Welsh star, John Charles, can really lay claim to coming close.
But so successfully and so relentlessly has Bale been depicted as a mercenary, happy just to pick up his paycheck and go and play golf, that even in Britain he is not afforded the reverence that his career warrants. Wales remains fiercely loyal, of course, but to that great, borderless constituency of Premier League fans, Bale will be returning from Spain with his tail between his legs.
When Bale joins Spurs, perhaps in the next few days, he will be seen not as a coup but as either an indulgence — a little reverie on memory lane for Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman — or a luxury. Manchester United considered him, but decided Jadon Sancho was a far better bet. Most fans, of most clubs aside from Tottenham, would agree.
That offers a glimpse not only of the power of the news media to shape perceptions, even when refracted by the interpretation of a second media bloc — what is written in Spanish papers eventually bleeds into their British equivalents — but of just how fickle the business Bale finds himself in can be.
It is at the height of the transfer window that soccer’s goldfish memory, its faddishness and its immediacy, is seen most clearly. The next thing is always the best thing. Potential is always more exciting than proof. As José Mourinho, Bale’s imminent manager, once observed, soccer is a sport that prefers those who have never lost a game, even if they have never played one.
English soccer — perhaps European soccer — has, in a sense, moved on from Bale. He is no longer new and exciting and fresh. The fact that he is, instead, tried and tested and proven is either deemed irrelevant or actively counts against him. Since he left, others have risen to take his place. He is a short-term signing. He is a gamble. He is a busted flush. He is not for us. He is best left to Spurs. He is a player from the past.
And yet, when he returns to the Premier League, he will do so as possibly the most decorated player ever to arrive on these shores. Age and injury may have dimmed his star a little, but memories should not be so short as to forget the force of nature that he once was, and that he might yet — even occasionally — still be. Common sense should dictate that, after seven years at Real Madrid, he might be something more than pace and power.
None of that should be overlooked, and none of it should be forgotten. All that Bale has achieved should not be obscured by the machinations of the Real Madrid machine, or by his succumbing to it. All that he was — all that he might still be, in the right time and the right place — should not be consigned quite so easily to yesterday. Soccer never stops moving; that is what makes it so compelling, so competitive. There are times, though, when it moves just a little too fast for its own good.

2020.09.17 20:03 kjonesatjaagnet What Is Influencer Marketing? An Industry on the Rise

What Is Influencer Marketing? An Industry on the Rise

$15 billion. It’s the estimated worth of the influencer marketing industry come 2022. If that seems like a lot, it will appear even more extreme when you consider the same industry was worth ‘just’ $8 billion in 2019.
But, what is influencer marketing?
If you follow brands like McDonald’s and Dunkin’, you’ve likely got a good taste for its modern day use-case. Earlier this month, McDonald’s partnered with artist Travis Scott and Dunkin’ with Tik Tok star Charli D’Amelio to create a signature meal and drink named after the two pop-culture icons.
Associate Professor of Marketing Anjali Bal says these contracts and product placements, no matter how simple they are, can build a connection between company and customer in ways not otherwise possible.

What Is Influencer Marketing?

Bal defines influencer marketing as a type of social media marketing that uses endorsements made by people, organizations, and/or groups seen as influential or experts in a particular area.
“The nature of influencer marketing is that consumers tend to trust information coming from influencers more than traditional marketing and advertisements,” Bal says. “It can also be seen as a modern form of a celebrity endorsement.”
These real-time product placements and demonstrations, most frequently used in conjunction with Instagram, have unsurprisingly correlated with the rise of social media.
“Because of the changes to how we view content, marketing had to adjust,” Bal says, mentioning how streaming services, which have largely replaced cable among younger generations, typically do not advertise in the middle of production. “We are seeing Millennials and Generation Z move to social media as their primary source for information. Companies that want to be relevant to these target markets need to show their products and services where their consumers are.”

Examples of Influencer Marketing, and How Followings Are Built

According to Bal, influencers like Kylie Jenner, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Selena Gomez successfully market products to their audiences through their likability, memorability, adaptability, and meaningfulness.
These soft advertisements include everything from serums, to cologne, to ice cream.
“If the individual is likable, they get people in the door,” Bal said. “But, all of these things work together to both build and then maintain a following.
“When the consumer is soliciting information themselves, they are more likely to be influenced by it,” she added. “A traditional ad can be seen as interrupting what I really want to do, whereas the influencer product placement is often seen as less aggressive.”

2020.09.17 18:05 stop-the-verbal Kinda mad how by the 23rd that means we waited nearly an extra 3 months for a new season

And to speak about the recent update there are good stuff but it feels rushed as fuck i saw one guy had 2 striker black sterns that were tradelocked.
Ill just mention this because its prob annoyed me the most:
Why the fuck would u downgrade and items for no reason like why did some ncvr go down to ncr or ncr to uncommon like for what reason?? And you cant counter this by saying well some items were upgraded when no one gives a fuck if mg88 was upgraded it wont change the price because its a crate/bp item. Also why did my cristianos have to be taken off all my presets just because its now a legacy item like anyone gives a fuck its not like theres gonna be a 100k players after it goes free to play so legacy items become rare.

2020.09.16 21:20 psaez9 Doubt as a newbie

Hey guys, some weeks ago I was checking some NBA/NFL card trading sites and i wondered if football (soccer) cards had some value, then I started to search on the Internet and found this amazing world.
I'm from Spain and as a kid, I really liked those trading cards, but they were so hard to find on the stores, so I mainly completed sticker collections instead of trading cards collections.
So... here is my question.
I have some good stickers... like Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi on the Germany WC 2006 Panini or , rookie Messi of 2004-05 (Not "Mega Cracks") and Ramos rookie from ESTE collections... etc etc
BUT, they are all glued to the album...
Is there anything I could do with them? Or they lost all their value for collectors?

(As a "fun fact", on 2004-05 I decided to complete the "Mega Cracks" collection. In order to do this I went to the capital every Sunday to buy there some packs and trade with my cards.Well I ended that season with about 97/98% of the album completed... Well so... No, I DONT HAVE "that" messi card, the one valued 30k+ euro ...Also, all my cards from that collection are Mint condition, literally from pack to sleeve )

Regards and Thank you for your time, hope to hear some good news :D

Lionel Messi top of Forbes money list in 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo second
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has topped the Forbes list for highest-earning footballers in 2020.
Forbes estimated Messi’s yearly earnings at $126m (£97.2m) with Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo second on $117m (£90.3m).
Neymar was in third with Paris St-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe fourth.
Three Premier League players – Mohamed Salah, Paul Pogba and David de Gea – made the top 10, as did Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale.
Welshman Bale came eighth in the list at $29m (£22.4m) despite a disappointing 2019-20 season, on a personal level, which saw him fall out with Real boss Zinedine Zidane and only feature in two of his club’s last 14 matches of the campaign.
Liverpool forward Salah was fifth, ahead of Manchester United midfielder Pogba in sixth, with United goalkeeper De Gea in 10th.
Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann was seventh and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was ninth.
The top three were in the same order as in 2019, although Mbappe rose three places from seventh to fourth.
Argentine Messi, 33, tried to leave Barcelona this summer and submitted a transfer request in August, but decided to stay because no club would be able to afford his release clause.

2020.09.15 09:14 Fowleyman7 I feel as if I'm done trying with my life.

I woke up this morning to see a post on Twitter, saying that Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Floyd Mayweather and Tiger Woods each have a nett worth of over a billion Dollars. This seems an absurd amount of money for one person. Don't get me wrong, with all their talent they deserve it however it forced me to have a long look at my life. I am 26, living withy fiance in a house we own. I have a loving family and job which really isn't something to sniff at nowadays. My personal life is great but I wake up every morning wanting to die. I would never kill myself, but I wish something would happen to me on my way to work so I wouldn't have to go in. I hate my job. I'm a ductwork estimator in a construction firm being payed minimum wage and I can't stand it. Yesterday I called in sick and faked an ankle injury so i wouldn't have to go in. Last year I called and said I broke my wrist just to get a day off and wore a wrist splint for 4 weeks to get away with it. Both my parents are hard working people, and my brother so you'd think it would leave an impression on me. It didn't. I've never really worked hard in my life, I got decent ish grades at school only to drop off in sixth form. I didn't go to University and have never had a job paying higher than the bare minimum. I am not making excuses. My fiance has depression due to previous trauma and works harder than most people I know. She is amazing. This is just my personality. There is no career I want to do. There is no talent that I have that could get me out of this hole that I'm in. I can't quit because obviously on this climate, to quit a job when it's paying a mortgage is an absurd thing to do. But I'm so tired of trying. I'm a shy person with anxiety and depression so I won't even be replying to comments and dms. I just wanted to write this down so I don't go crazy.

¿Qué dijo a continuación?

Valeu. :)

2020.09.11 15:17 MeetTheV My weight loss is now on track

Hello guys, newbie here and not a native english speaker. I will use metric system for my post, since I have all my measurements on it.
I am a 25 year old male with a bit of a strange and, at the same time, common experience. When I was about 16-17 I was at 1.81 and 78-79 kilos which on me looked decent. I wasn’t muscular at all in my upper body, but had good muscle tone on my legs, since I was playing football 3-5 times/week. Then I started working in IT on my own business and sedentary life style kicked in. When I was 18 I moved to a new country and had to work nights and days to provide for me and my now ex-gf. Was a bit hard but I now understand it had to be done in order for one of us to go to university at least.
Life was decent, as money kept coming and everything seemed to be going fine, except my health. I reached ~117-120kg and boy, did that feel both gut-wrenching and embarrassing. 21 year old that almost cannot see his wee wee is sad.
Then at about 23 things went south and I no longer had a relationship and realized my life was just a mess, I worked out and got to maybe 110 or so, felt a bit better, but then again reverted to some of my old habits and was hovering around 110.
Met a new girl (and boy, what a girl) that was able to hear me out. Didn’t really need to hear much from her, just for her to listen to me, which she did and god damn it had done wonders. Only thing she told me was: ‘If this is a problem for you and you don’t feel good, go out and do it, don’t postpone it, don’t find excuses.’ And I am now on my way. I am now standing at 100kg, but I put more than 4 kg of lean mass on me and lost ~ 15 of fat on total. I eat better, I feel better, I can run 1km without feeling the need to call 911 right after. Last week has been the greatest, I lost one kg of fat and got under the obesity line, which boosted my anyway high morale.
I can now aim and am sure I will get to under 15% body fat and show some abs that myself and my girl both deserve to see.
As for my ways, I am on a low carb, moderate-high protein diet. Aside from a slice of toast a day I cut all bread and similar products. Also on a suplement of whey protein as it helps my muscle recover and grow. I train 4x a week with a trainer, both cardio circuits and weight training and 2 times by myself with Cristiano Ronaldo’s cardio circuit plus some weights. I can feel my abs now, even if they’re under a fat layer, but I can feel them. I am happy I found it within me to take the hard way and enjoy every part of it. From telling my trainer to stop the session because of me feeling sick and puking I am now telling him 12 when he asks me to do 8. Because I can do it and, if I can, I will. From missing training because of a chaotic schedule to going two times a week for extra training. I am now sure that I won’t fail because not only I don’t want to experience fatness again, but I love every bit of my weight loss and body, as it transforms. And I will make a promise that, in two and a half months I will update with a pic of my abs.
Stay strong and motivated!

Gracias.

2020.09.10 15:03 vik1980 Is the Juventus cycle finally ending?

My most brutal, and honest piece about Juventus. In previous times, I've tried to be polite, while disagreeing with some of the moves their management has made. This time, I've chosen to be direct, rather than circling the issues or being resaved in my thoughts. I even kept the personal bias aside and tried to keep things objective. It was hard. I've tried to look at things from a number of different angles, and things don't look good no matter how you slice it.

Financial :-
They comfortably have the highest wage bill in Italy. In fact, they have more than double the next highest club wages, and nearly triple the amount paid by Napoli (in fifth spot). They've also posted losses for a third consecutive year. This last part might not seem particularly troubling (most all big clubs mostly operate with some losses), but it cannot be ignored or brushed under the carpet.
Also, if you look at their player wages, they have a lot of average to below average players on 'star player' wages. e.g.- De Vrij earns less than Bernardeschi and Danilo, and nearly just as much as Rugani. Lukaku, comfortably Inter's highest earner, earns close to the same as Ramsey & Rabiot.
However, what's troubling here is that their biggest asset, their own stadium, is now Null-&-Void, so to speak. Havin your own stadium means not having to share the revenue with the Govt., and a modern stadium means the ability to charge much more than the average club. With no crowds because of the pandemic, that is not happening. As such, the 'no crowds' directive is hurting them much more than others. I also read that the 300m capital injection by the board is nearly all gone, that only 50m of it remains.
Given all these issues, it makes that much more sense why Agnelli keeps pushing for a new Champions League, guaranteeing more revenue to the historically big clubs. They need the money because they simply can't keep up with the PL money power, or the immbalanced TV deal of La Liga.

Sporting :-
While they have a nice core to build around (Demiral, De Ligt, Kulusevski, Arthur, Bentancur), there's obvious question marks even there. Demiral just had a knee injury, while De Ligt has taken time adapting to Serie A. Arthur has obvious discipline issues. While those can be overlooked, it's the other players that should concern the fans.
The bulk of their regular starters, though, are quite old. Bonucci (33), Chilini (36), Cuadrado (32) Schezny (30), C. Ronaldo (35), Costa, Sandro and Ramsey (all 30 in a couple of months) is a lot of minutes that'll need replacing very soon. However, rather than adding new blood, they're trying to sign Suarez (33) or Jeko (34).
Most of the rest of the squad (Danilo, MDS, Bernardeschi, Rugani) is overpaid, and clearly not good enough for the club. Each season, it's the same story, Paratici offering their surplus for quality players, and getting shot down. This time, he tried the same tactic, but in the Premier League, with the same results. It's proven a herculean task to get rid of their deadwood so far, and will continue to be that.
A Pogba for free happens very rarely. Even Dybala cost 40m, and that was 4 years back. Given the financial issues, and the number of positions that'll need covering soon, rejuvenating the squad to their previous level will be mighty difficult.

Management :-
At some point, Juve stopped being Juve, and started becoming Inter. I'm talking about the times when Moratti would go for the flash purchase at outlandish prices, all in the hope of the elusive titles.
Well, Juve've been doing that for a few years now. When they got beat at the Champions League Final in 2015, they already had the pillars (Dybala, Pogba, Morata) to start another cycle. Instead, they decided to sell Pogba and buy Higuain to chase that elusive trophy. When they failed a second time (2017), they decided to spend a 100m on a 33 yo Cristiano Ronaldo. A fool hardy purchase no matter how you look at it. Even if his performances have been decent since, his age, coupled with the outlandish wages he's on, means there's no way they're recouping that money. In fact, they might have trouble getting rid of him without taking a financial loss (book value-depreciation).
They're also routinely ignoring the young Italian talents (Bastoni, Barella, Mancini, Sensi, Tonali), the previous foundation of their success. The days of 'Italjuve' are gone. Even now, rather than taking Belotti, who'd be the perfect partner for Dybala in the long run, and the Benzema for C. Ronaldo immediately, they seem to ignore him entirely.
Even coaching wise, they had Allegri, then fired him to get Sarri. Now, they've fired him to bring in Pirlo. It seems like they're devolving, and fast. Would it surprise anyone if they fire Pirlo and bring in Inzaghi next?

Coaching :-
Here's another head scratching move. They now seem to have fallen into the trap that Milan fell in a couple of years ago. i.e.- hoping to find their own Zidane or Guardiola.
Pirlo was a top player, and has played and learnt from the very best coaches throughout his career. He also seems to have a calm and thoughtful demeanour, which will aid him nicely in dealing with the ego's in the dressing room.
That said, it's one thing to learn and play under top coaches, another to teach and get players to play like you want them to. He's never managed a single game till now, not at a small club in the lower divisions, not as an assistant, not even at the junior level. The amount of scrutiny that'll come from the media for every starting formation or substitution will be a whole other level. He'll certainly need that calmness to keep his wits about. Pirlo's reasons for picking Tudor seem downright amateurish. He gives the idea of expecting Tudor to organise the defence while he takes care of the midfield, and the talent on the pitch will take care of the attack. That's not how things work. Tudor, has a history of failing at his previous coaching appointments.
While it's not impossible that Pirlo figures things out, gets the talent already at the club to play a collective, I just don't see it happening. It would not surprise me if he stumbles early in the season, and the scrambles to fix the issues, over think things (with changes in formation, line-up changes etc.) and not recover.

We've seen the same sentiment echoed for a few years now. Every season start, it's pundits wondering and fans hoping that this season will be the season. Well, it seems like that moment is finally upon us. This season feels like we might finally be that moment we've (neutrals, fans of other Serie A clubs) been inching closer to. That season when fans of other Serie A teams and neutrals all over rejoice in a change at the top. There's simply far too many issues to fix, and a fresh out of school manager to try and fix them.
All this doesn't mean that they'll crash and burn into oblivion now. It just means a return to the mean, rather than being the exception. Milan are improving, Inter are already there, Roma have a new owner, and Napoli are starting a new cycle. They'll have to fight for a title like everyone else. No more walking away with the league title like it's their personal property.

2020.09.10 14:38 PaulChittenden From Plumbers Apprentice to $100 Million - 26 Business Lessons from an Expert Marketer (Conor McGregor)

Conor McGregor went from plumbers apprentice to making $100 Million. This is not all that surprising given he is a sports superstar.
What is surprising is that he did this in MMA, a sport that notoriously doesn't pay this kind of money.
In fact, McGregor's net worth is at least 3X that of his TOP peers in the sport. And if you look at the Top 15 highest-paid fighters in the UFC, three are only there because they fought McGregor.
Conor McGregor is surely a controversial character, but there are surely some business lessons to learn from his rise to fame. After studying his career and countless hours of video, here are 26 lessons I've learned from the man himself.

Lesson 1 - Find a Need in the Market that Needs Fulfilling

When Conor moved to a new suburb, he lost his group of friends and had to start over. As the new guy, he got in his share of fights. Without a group of friends to back him up, he needed to learn to fight so he could protect himself. With boxing training, any potential attackers might find themselves getting more than they’ve bargained for and decide to pick on an easier target.
Crumlin Boxing Club fulfilled that need for Conor, and initiated his journey to superstardom.
In business, you need to find a need with your particular audience. Fulfill that need and buyers will come to you.
Let’s take boxing gyms as an example.
In a rough neighborhood, you’ll find “real” boxing gyms. The boxers here come to learn how to truly fight and even compete.
In “upper-class” neighborhoods, you’ll find more cardio based boxing gyms. The goal at these gyms are more for exercise than actual fighting. You won’t see too many sparring sessions at these gyms.
Both models are successful. Understand your market.

Lesson 2 - Find Your Passion. Try new things

McGregor and Tom Egan, while opposites, met in high school both enjoyed MMA. They watched UFC broadcasts on weekends together. It was Egan who sparked Conor’s interest in MMA.
Conor started dabbling in both MMA and boxing, and eventually, left boxing for his true love of MMA. With this focus, Conor went on to dominate the MMA scene.
In business, even the best entrepreneurs can get burnt out. If you look at Elon Musk, Richard Branson, or Steve Jobs, they are all extremely passionate about what they do.
They can and do put in the hours to become the best in their niches. When they speak, you hear the passion and feel drawn to their cause.
It’s hard to be tremendously successful if you hate what you do.

Lesson 3 - Find a Mentor to Increase the Likelihood and Decrease the Time to Success

Although they were around the same age, Tom Egan made it to the UFC first. Conor saw his pal in the UFC, and knew that he had a chance too. The impossible became possible and no longer just a dream.
In business, you need to find a mentor who is ahead of you. Mentors can help you avoid big mistakes.
More importantly, mentors show you what is possible and can create a complete level change in your game.

Lesson 4 - Surround Yourself with People That Want You to Succeed & Will Support You. Stay Loyal to Them.

Dee Devlin has been by Conor’s side since the beginning. She supported him when he was a nobody.
She believed in him.
Dee experienced all of the ups and downs on the path to fame. They grew together.
When you become rich and famous, people try to take advantage of you. It becomes harder to find true friends and romantic partners. Conor avoided this and married the girl who helped him get to where he is now.
Let’s face it, some successful entrepreneurs did not have this support system. They were doubted, laughed at even. This doubt fueled their desire to succeed.
Even so, these entrepreneurs eventually built teams which were so inspired by the entrepreneur’s vision, they eventually do build these supportive relationships.
If you do have this support system, remember who was there supporting you from the beginning. True friendships are an important foundation for happiness as you become more successful.

Lesson 5 - Intense Focus on Your Craft Decide on What You Want and Put 100% Focus Into It

Not only did Dee Devlin give Conor emotional and moral support, she financially supported him as well. She waited tables so that Conor could focus 100% on his training. She helped him buy healthier foods to fuel his body.
Conor was naturally talented. Adding in 100% focus to his training allowed him to accelerate his skills much quicker.
Most people are juggling too many things. Spending hours playing Call of Duty, late nights drinking, dreaming instead of doing, are taking time away from honing your craft.
The best of the best are practicing. They are making sales calls. In the studio.
With 100% focus and persistence, you will eventually make it.

Lesson 6 - The Law of Attraction Visualizing Yourself to Greatness

Conor attributes the use of visualization and the Law of Attraction to manifest his way to becoming a champion.
This all sounds kind of crazy, but the same technique has been cited by Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey, plus dozens of athletes and mega celebrities including, Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lindsey Vonn, Tony Robbins, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Will Smith, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West,.
What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is a belief that a person’s thoughts and focus bring positive or negative experiences into the person’s life.
Conor’s sister Erin, a bodybuilder and fitness model, recommended he read The Secret, a book on the Law of Attraction. He opted for the DVD version.
"Even when I first watched it, I was like, this is bulls--t," McGregor told Bleacher Report in 2015.
But after watching it, something clicked. Conor and Dee started using it to visualize little things, like getting the front parking spots. After seeing it work, he went on to visualize himself as a champion. In fact, his family credits the moment he watched The Secret, as the birth of Conor McGregor, the superstar.
Stop thinking small. Dream big!

Lesson 7 - Fight IQ Get a Deep Understanding of Your Competition

In his first UFC post fight interview, he clearly said that he thought Brimmage was emotional and would overthrow his shots. Conor fully understands there is the game before the game.
McGregor’s fight IQ is off the charts.
All fighters watch films of previous fights. Try to find subtle tells. They begin each fight carefully, trying to figure out distance and timing.
Watching Conor, it almost looks intuitive. It seems that he knows his opponents better than they know themselves.
This is most evident after the Aldo fight. Video is released of McGregor practicing the exact sequence that dispatched the 10-year winning streak of the champion.
After the fight, Conor said he saw a subtle tell before the bell rang. Aldo’s right hand was twitching. He knew Aldo was going to unload a big right hand that would set up his left hand knockout punch. Seriously, watch the video below. Mystic Mac believes in the power of visualization.
Know your competition. You can outsmart them. Be faster. Have better customer service. Be good where they suck.

Lesson 8 - Be an entertainer. Stand for Something. Be Polarizing. People Will Love You or Hate You & That’s Not Bad.

Dana White knew Conor McGregor was going to be a star the very first time they met. Why?
Dana said it was his personality. His laugh.
What else is underneath this?
Conor McGregor had a clear focus to become UFC Champion and become rich and famous. He had an outlandish personality. He was witty. He would entertain the masses.
I’ve never met Conor McGregor in person, but from most reports from fans and casuals alike, McGregor is a completely different person outside of the ring.
A nice and pleasant guy.
Is the UFC Conor McGregor just a persona?
Who else had success in the UFC with an outlandish and polarizing personality?
The WWE has perfected this character. They call them the heel. Conor McGregor may or may not be the heel, but he definitely is polarizing, and he is very much like a WWE character.
Love him or hate him, every MMA and boxing fan knows Conor McGregor.
Like the greatest before him, McGregor knows that almost any attention is good attention.
Step into the MMA forums or a Facebook discussion, and you will see the Conor McGregor haters out in full force.
But guess what, his haters still buy his PPV fights - to see him lose!
If you want to be a public figure, amplify your message. Take who you are, and multiply that by 3X or 10X.
Sure, you want to be authentic. Don’t be someone you’re not. But take it up a notch.
Be exciting. Be an entertainer.

Lesson 9 - Find Your 1000 True Fans Cater to Your Base

In his first UFC fight, Conor is seen with an Irish flag draped over his shoulders as he walks to the ring. Before he was a worldwide superstar, Conor worked to become the ambassador of Irish MMA.
In fact, as his stardom grew, it seemed half of Ireland would travel to his fights.
The UFC, having dominated the American MMA market, was ready to move into Europe, and Conor McGregor would carry the entirety of Ireland.
Kevin Kelly, editor at Wired magazine, wrote an essay called “1,000 True Fans.” The essay, a must read, states that all it takes to earn a living as creator is 1,000 true fans who will buy your work.
For McGregor, his fanbase started with his countrymen. As his stardom grew, so did his base of fans.
In business, you have to find your core supporters. The people who will buy your product. The people who will share your content. The people that love your product or service so much they have to tell their friends about it.
Find your Ireland and grow from there.

Lesson 10 - Fighting is a Mind Game Discover Your Opponent’s Weaknesses

Conor McGregor is a master of getting inside his opponent’s head. Often, his opponents become emotional and abandon their game plan or overextend their shots.f
Many fighters talk trash. Many fighters try to intimidate their opponents. They may even come close to actually fighting during staredowns. But - they don’t completely destroy 8 weeks of game planning the way Conor does.
Before the fight with Dustin Poirier, McGregor said:
Just as he says, he defeats Poirier by KO in the first round. Mystic Mac is born.
Dustin Poirier is an amazing fighter. As a fellow Louisiana boy, he’s one of my favorites.
I don’t believe that Dustin was beat in the ring. He was beaten before the fight.
McGregor baited him. Made him angry. Dustin Poirer didn’t follow his game plan.
Conor’s remarks that this is just a game really sums it all up. After the Dustin Poirier fight, we see McGregor take his head games up a notch. The best example is the fight with Aldo.
Aldo went 10 years without a defeat. Fighters were afraid of him.
After defeating Dennis Siver, McGregor jumps the Octagon fence and goes straight for Aldo, showing he has no fear of the champion.
The pre-fight insults from McGregor are being hurled at unprecedented speed - expletives, racist comments, attacking the entire Brazilian nation. But when McGregor steals Aldo's belt, there is one moment when you see the look of defeat on the Brazilian's face.
McGregor raises his hands as if he already knows he’s the champion. Aldo, unable to do anything in the moment, mentally breaks. Maybe it was just a seed of doubt, but McGregor was in his head.
As a small brand, sometimes going after the big guys can be tough. Study your competitor. Find out what they do well and where they are lacking.
No one is perfect. Focus on your competitor's weaknesses. Fill those gaps. Be nimble. Slowly take market share by doing what they cannot.

Lesson 11 - Differentiation - Discover What Sets You Apart from the Crowd

Conor had big dreams. He was already visualizing himself as a massive star. A rich, popular, double champ at that.
How would the double champ act? What would he look like? How would he speak?
Rumors were going around that McGregor was getting easy fights. Maybe it was true. The UFC was investing in his brand to grow the European market. They didn’t want their golden boy to lose yet.
I cannot confirm this through any research, but I’m sure Conor was aware of the UFC’s plans and his role in them.
Instead of denying the matchmaking, McGregor doubles down and talks about his relationship with Lorenzo (one of the owner’s of the UFC). In fact, they even have a tradition of toasting a shot of whiskey after McGregor’s wins.
McGregor has gone from plumber’s apprentice to UFC star. His Lorenzo comments are positioning him as the employee who is winning and dining with the CEO. Isn’t this the dream of all employees?
Go back to the beginning of Conor’s Instagram. It quickly goes from typical fighter to businessman and luxury everything - clothes, cars, private jets.
He dons his trademark suits.
Conor is no longer just a fighter. He’s the guy from the rough neighborhood that made it.
He’s transcended fighter status. He’s different.
In business, marketing and positioning are the key to market domination.
Your brand, your image, your packaging, your customer service. Are they aligned with your target market?

Lesson 12 - Understand the Machine that Drives Your Industry

McGregor worked hard to build his personal brand. He built his profile, entertaining the masses and winning in spectacular fashion.
Winning fights gets better fights. But have you noticed that some fighters keep winning but aren’t given a main event? Maybe they are passed over for a title shot?
McGregor understood the game. He dove into the machine head on, realizing that putting up big numbers gets you bigger opportunities.
More than anything, the UFC organization is a promotion and hype machine. The UFC’s job is to sell fights, build storylines, and develop fighters.
Conor understands this. He has fully leveraged the UFC’s marketing powers to 10X his brand. He layers his own marketing on top of the UFC’s efforts.
McGregor took chances. He talked smack. He manufactured beef / rivalry. He won his fights in spectacular fashion, and he built his social media empire to engage his fans.
The UFC brass see this. They know his popularity is growing, so they put even more dollars behind him to promote him. He coaches on the Ultimate Fighter Season 22 against Urijah Faber (another very popular fighter). He gets more popular. He pulls bigger numbers. It’s a never ending cycle for now.
With fame and celebrity comes opportunities. Big names pull big money. Bigger purses. Bigger sponsorship deals. And other opportunities outside the ring.
What is the machine behind your industry? Determine how the big boys in your industry are winning.
Is it their sales team? Is it paid ads? Is it media coverage?
Deconstruct the winners and find your way in.

Lesson 13 - When Opportunity Presents Itself, Take Your Shot

When Aldo was injured, Mendes stepped in on 3 week’s notice to fight for the interim title.
Both McGregor and Mendes saw the opportunity, McGregor, an interim belt and Mendes the belt plus a McGregor payday,
While this happens all the time, it is a risk. McGregor was preparing for a different fighter. Mendes didn’t have a full training camp.
In business, opportunities can present themselves at any time. It is up to you to see them and capitalize on them.
“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how to do it later.” - Richard Branson

Lesson 14 - Precision Beats Power, Timing Beats Speed

A fighter studies their opponent to understand their movement, any tells, and potential holes in their game. Conor does this exceptionally well.
In my first few sparring sessions, my biggest surprise was how fast the more advanced fighter's were. Not their hand speed. It was how fast their mind worked. They saw my punches coming almost before I threw them. They were able to move out of the way and counter with ease. They saw something I didn't see.
A fighter with a high fight IQ has:
So far, Conor's only hole is his ground game. Standing up, he has the upper hand. After the Aldo fight, he said this:
This quote is a great way to think about business.
Precision beats power. Oftentimes, you are competing with the big boys, the entrenched competitors, or the huge multinational corporation. They have power.
A smaller business can compete with precision. You can serve the customer better. You can offer a more personalized service. You can serve in a profitable capacity, that the big boys are ignoring because it is too small for them. Be precise.
Timing beats speed. Being first to market can help you get first crack at market share, maybe even give you time to build a moat. Yet, timing beats speed. Sometimes it is better to let the first mover establish a market before moving in. You’ll save all the cost of developing the market, and you can learn from their mistakes. Time the market.

Lesson 15 - See the Opportunity & Ask for What You Want

At this point, Conor McGregor basically gets whatever fight he wants. However, Lesson 15 flips the script. This isn’t about McGregor. It is about Nate Diaz.
After Nate Diaz defeated Michael Johnson at UFC Fox 17, he stepped up to the mic and called out Conor McGregor in an expletive filled rant.
This takes us back to another infamous McGregor press conference with reference to “Red Panty Night.”
Conor McGregor brings in huge paydays, and he says a fight with him is cause for celebration. Fighters will make more fighting him than any other fighter on the roster.
Diaz understood this. He saw the opportunity. And he asked for it.
Diaz’s first fight with Conor McGregor earned him 4X what he made for his previous second highest grossing fight.
The second fight went on to earn him more in one night than he made his entire UFC career.
Then, his rise in popularity has earned him a noticeable bump in his post McGregor fights.
What can we learn from this? Too many people can spot the opportunity, but don’t have the balls to go for it.
Ask for the meeting.
Ask for the sale.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. - Wayne Gretzky

Lesson 16 - Rivalries are Opportunities

Nate Diaz was no match for Conor McGregor’s verbal sparring as seen in several pre-fight interviews. But Nate Diaz has his own Stockton “Gangsta” style of dealing with rivalries that fans love.
After Conor shows up 30 minutes late, Diaz walks out. Diaz’s team throws a water bottle. Things get out of hand.
Rivalries can be great marketing opportunities. This clash no doubt sold more PPV’s.
Take a look at Wendy’s taking a shot at McDonald’s on Twitter.
Look at the number of Retweets. Holy crap.
Have some fun. Maybe a rivalry is just the PR stunt you need.

Lesson 17 - Do Not Succumb to Failure. Learn from Your Mistakes. Pivot.

Mcgregor lost to Diaz in their first matchup by submission. Conor analyzed his mistakes in training and particularly his diet.
He put these learnings to use in their second matchup.
Conor came back and won their second fight by decision, in a grueling 5 round matchup.
In business, we experience failures just like in life. Markets change, regulations change, and unprecedented events such as Covid can derail our plans.
You need to be okay with failure. But don’t let a failure go to waste.
Analyze it. See what when wrong. Find out how you could have changed things. Make a plan not to make that mistake again.
Maybe you need to pivot. Maybe you just need to make some tweaks. Either way, a failure can make your business stronger, if you implement the changes necessary to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

Lesson 18 - Make History Change the Game

In the lead up to the fight with Alvarez, a promo is released, and we hear Conor Mcgregor say:
There has not been a UFC champion in two weight classes at the same time. McGregor was gunning to go down as the first in the UFC record books.
At the same time, he would make history as headlining the first MMA fight in Madison Square Gardens. It was truly a historic moment in the world of MMA.
Riches, fame. It means nothing in the end.
But, history?
And just like the story of Roger Bannister and the four-minute mile, Conor opened up the door for other champ champs - Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo.
Too many entrepreneurs are doing “me-too” business. Chasing successful businesses in hopes of making some cash.
The true game changers are going big. Trying to change history.
Truly think about what you can do to change the industry, to innovate, to do the impossible.

Lesson 19 - Leverage Other People’s Audiences

Back in 2015, Conor McGregor and Urijah Faber were announced as coaches on the Ultimate Fighter reality show contest.
The same year, video surfaced of a sparring session between Game of Throne’s “The Mountain”
Each of these appearances allowed Conor to utilize other people’s audiences (OPA) to gain additional fans outside of his current fan base.
The UFC’s Ultimate Fighter series brought in the series’ fans plus fans of Urijah that may not have been fans of Conor and gave them a chance to get to know him over multiple exposures (episodes).
The playful sparring session with The Mountain allowed Conor to gain exposure to the Game of Throne’s audience who followed Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. He’s appeared on the cover of GQ and appeared on the cover of Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.,
McGregor has also had appearances on Conan O’brien’s Late Night and has sung pub songs with Jimmy Fallon.
Speaking of Conan, did you know 23 celebrities own shares in the UFC? Here they are:
Now this is a genius move by the UFC. By allowing celebrities to own a piece of the UFC, the UFC knows that they will promote the business to their following, bringing in additional fans that would not normally be watching.
McGregor’s biggest example of leveraging other people’s audiences is his crossover fight with Mayweather. Mayweather is boxing’s greatest fighter ever. Not only does Mayweather have a huge audience, this fight would introduce Conor McGregor to the entire boxing audience.
No matter your industry, you need to know where your customers are. Who has a similar pool of leads in their audience?
Partner with another complimentary company that shares your audience.
Get a story written about you and your company in your industry’s magazine.
Go where the fish are, but fish with dynamite.

Lesson 20 - Know Your Numbers What is the Most Profitable Thing in Your Business?

At this point, Conor McGregor is the highest paid fighter in UFC history.
Yet, he is making peanuts compared to the big names in boxing.
Conor realizes this and guns for the biggest name in boxing, Floyd Mayweather. If he can make this happen, it will be the biggest payday in his career.
Similarly, you need to understand your own numbers. Where is the money?
What product lines are the most profitable? What are the least?
Make decisions based on numbers.

Lesson 21 - Negotiating Like a Pro Keep it Win-Win, and Give to Get

How do you get the biggest name in boxing, arguably the best boxer to ever step into the ring, to agree to a fight with an MMA fighter who has never professionally boxed?
You need to understand what the other party wants. Not just on the surface. What they truly want.
What would Mayweather possibly want?
  1. Money - Mayweather likes to spend money and is rumored to have financial troubles.
  2. Vanity - Mayweather wants to keep his undefeated record untarnished.
  3. Cash Flow - Mayweather wants big fights. At 43, the window of opportunity is slowly closing.
When Mayweather fought Pacquiao, the purse was split $180 million for Mayweather and $120 million for Pacquiao, according to Kurt Badenhausen.
Big number for sure. What could Conor offer? He has a big name, but he’s not Manny Pacquiao.
Money: Conor offers a better split of revenues. Reportedly, Mayweather took in $500 million with Conor only taking $100 million.
Vanity: On paper, this fight should be the least risk for Mayweather. Sure, Conor has a monster left hand, but he’s not a professional boxer. Mayweather believes he will retain his record.
Cash Flow: McGregor offers to promote the hell out of this fight. With Mayweather believing he has no chance of losing, he also retains his record, assuring he can continue to get big money fights.
Let’s face it. Conor couldn’t lose. Losing to Mayweather in a boxing match doesn’t hurt his brand at all, and he comes away $100 million dollars richer and an even bigger brand.
The secret to negotiating is to have a deep understanding of what the other party wants.
Make the deal win-win. If the other party has massive leverage or if the deal could be a game changer for you or your business, don’t be afraid to give them more.

Lesson 22 - Spend More Time on Promotion

MMA training takes a considerable amount of time.
MMA fighters train in multiple disciplines, lift weights, and do a ton of cardio. They also need time to sleep and recover.
With all this training, how do you even have time to promote the fight?
Still McGregor has taken time to make appearances, go on press tours, television, podcasts, and more.
A lot of fighters hate promoting. It takes time away from the things they need to do to prepare for a fight.
No matter how hard it is, promotion is key to becoming a big name in the sport.
This is great advice, especially for creatives. Creatives spend so much time producing work. It seems productive, but you need to spend equal time promoting.

Lesson 23 - Diversify You Need Multiple Revenue Streams

As in most professional sports, MMA fighters take a brutal toll on their bodies. It is hard to determine the average fighter’s career length, but the 9-year rule, stating that fighter’s start to decline around the 9-year mark, is a good indicator.
This means that most fighters only have 10 years to maximize their career earnings in the sport.
McGregor has done this through sponsorships:
He has a residency deal with the Wynn Las Vegas for his post fight after parties.
He owns digital properties selling workouts (McGregor FAST Program), emojis (MacMoji App), the MacTalk App, and the everything McGregor and MMA website, the Mac Life. All of these generate additional revenue.
Then like a true Irishman, he started his own line of whiskey, Proper 12, just in time before the biggest fight of his MMA career against Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a genius move, McGregor sponsored his own UFC fight to promote his new whiskey. The brand has reportedly brought in $1 billion in sales in its first year.
Changing markets, the economy, or a pandemic can all change everything in an instant. It is important to have multiple revenue streams to both maximize revenue generation opportunities and safeguard you from a change in circumstances such as a lay-off.
Side Hustles are becoming more and more popular!

Lesson 24 - There is No Such Thing as Bad Publicity

Conor McGregor and his team’s bus incident ignited a flurry of bad press. A string of bad publicity follows. Let's take a quick look at the Google trends for Conor Mcgregor searches over time:
There are 12 peaks indicating high searches:
  1. Becomes Cage Warriors Double Champ (& tweeted by Joe Rogan)
  2. McGregor vs Mendes (& interviewed on Conan)
  3. McGregor vs. Aldo
  4. McGregor vs. Diaz I
  5. McGregor vs. Diaz II
  6. McGregor vs. Alvarez
  7. McGregor vs. Mayweather
  8. McGregor Bus Incident
  9. McGregor vs. Khabib
  10. Accusation of Sexual Assault
  11. Mcgregor Bar Fight
  12. Mcgregor vs. Cerrone
Numbers 8, 10, & 11 are all bad press.
But an old saying by P.T. Barnum rang true.
The fight with Khabib went on to become the biggest fight in UFC history.
Now the saying isn’t 100% true, we’ve all seen bad press sink a company, but let’s be real, this is the fight game. The fans secretly loved it. Come on, he’s a fighter. We expect this.
Bad Publicity can actually help smaller brands, as it still gets eyeballs on the product, service, or person. The strategy definitely has some risks, but we’ve seen some major brands built with bad press (think Kim K’s sex tape).
However, larger brands can lose a lot of business with bad press.

Lesson 25 - Forward Momentum Propels You Forward Choose Your Battles Wisely

After a long lay-off between the Khabib defeat, Conor needs to win a big fight to get back in title contention.
Donald Cerrone is a great matchup. It is a fight he is expected to win as he is a -300 favorite according to oddsmakers. Plus, Cerrone is one of the most entertaining fighters to watch with his stand and bang style.
McGregor’s quick win over Donald Cerrone provides him with forward momentum once again and vaults him right back into title contention.
Look for little wins. Forward momentum propels you forward, boosts your confidence, and reinvigorates your motivation.
Set goals. Blast them. Keep moving forward.

Lesson 26 - Be Willing to Walk Away if the Deal Isn’t Right

At this point, McGregor wants a big fight.
A rematch with Khabib, a contender’s fight against Gaethje, or a spectacle with either a Diaz trilogy or the BMF holder, Masvidal.
No other fights really make sense right now.
Maybe Conor will take a rematch with Floyd Mayweather or perhaps the talks about Pacquiao are true. Who knows.
Without the right match on the table, Conor decides to sit on the sideline until the right deal is presented.
Sometimes it is better to walk away and keep your stock high than to take a bad deal.

Bonus Lesson 1 - Take Care of Your Body & Mind

As an elite athlete, surely Conor McGregor is in great shape. Yet, it was a story about Lebron James that changed his entire outlook on training and mindset.
Lebron reportedly has a cadre of trainers, biomechanists, massage therapists, nutritionists, and personal chefs that have all contributed to his longevity in the sport. He does cryotherapy and spends time in the hyperbaric chamber. It was even reported that Lebron took ballet classes to help with his footwork.
He spends roughly $1.5 million a year on his body.
After McGregor read this, he knew he had to invest in his own body.
It seems he also worked with Tony Robbins, the ultimate life coach, to help with his mental state.
Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends. Choose three.
The above is a running joke in the startup world. It is hard to juggle everything when you’re busy trying to change the world.
Physical fitness and mental health are extremely important. Keep in shape and you’ll be more productive, have more energy, and be able to think more clearly.

Bonus Lesson 2 - Develop Unbreakable Confidence

Conor McGregor exudes confidence. While all professional athletes share this trait, Conor’s confidence is off the charts even for professional athlete standards.
A lot of people mistake McGregor’s confidence for arrogance. Understandably so.
Yet, Conor believes what he is saying.
I’ve watched countless hours of pre-fight interviews of both Conor and other fighters. Conor McGregor has absolute certainty he is going to win.
Other fighters also believe they are going to win. However, you can see faint tells, twitches, micro expressions, or even vocal uncertainties in their responses. Subconsciously, somewhere deep down, the fighter has doubts. Doubts in themselves and doubts in their abilities.
This is not evident anywhere in Conor McGregor’s UFC career. This does put the Tony Robbins coaching into perspective. DId Conor need help getting his confidence back after he was defeated by Khabib? Tony Robbins would be the guy to get your mojo back!
I believe there are two main drivers to success in business:
  1. Believing in yourself
  2. Having something to prove
Confidence gets you on the road to success. If you believe in yourself, you’ll be willing to take the chance at greatness.
On the flip side of the coin, there is one group of people with low confidence that also have the ability to make it big - someone who is determined to prove their worth. These people are so determined to be successful their lack of confidence does not scare them away. Slowly, they become confident along the way.

Bonus Lesson 3 - Be Grateful

The one thing that surprised me in the research for this article was how grateful he is for everything he has accomplished.
Conor Mcgregor, an international sports legend with $100+ million dollars. A man that could have anything he wants. And he is truly grateful for his success.
No matter your success in life, this one is the key. No amount of money will ever make you happy. But gratitude - for your family, your friends, your lifestyle, for every little positive thing in your life that you take for granted, that is the real key to success and happiness.

Over the years I have pretty much heard the same thing when it comes to putting Jesus in a box. Especially when talking to Christian Sects and Cults. We as humans at times try to make the idea of Grace confusing. I going to display an example from the scriptures then just add to it with some of our modern day religious thinking...From Acts Chapter 15
“Some men can down and began to teach...”Unless you are can not be saved.”
So let me give examples of what you hear now...
1.Unless you are baptized you can not be saved 2. Unless you speak in tongues you can not be saved 3. Unless you are baptized by the Holy Spirit you can not be saved 4. Unless you are baptized in the name of Jesus you can not be saved 5. Unless you go to church on Saturday you can not be saved 6. Unless you eat the Eucharist you can not be saved 7. Unless you believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel you can not be saved 8. Unless you believe Joseph Smith is God’s Prophet you can not be saved 9. Unless you are a good person you can not be saved 10. Unless you believe in the election and NJG is the true apostle you can not be saved.
If you have said any of these you might be in a cult?...
WE ARE SAVED THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD BY WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS. NOT WORKS OF OUR OWN. LEAST ANY MAN BOAST! The scriptures tell us if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the grave you will be saved!
Hope this cleared things up for you?
SOMOS SALVOS POR LA GRACIA DE DIOS POR LO QUE HIZO JESÚS EN LA CRUZ. NO OBRA NUESTRA PROPIA.

¡No sea copuchenta!
¡A ver, a ver!
Me estoy volviendo loco.
Me hizo pasar.
– me dijo.
– repuse.
- ¡Aquí no hay nadie! – me dijo.
